HIGHLIGHTS from the last race of the season
Cammish wins Brands Hatch finale to crown record-breaking season
Daniel Cammish crossed the line to claim victory in the final race of the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup GB season to end the year on a high after race a one spin.
The Leeds-based driver started race one from third on the grid after a rain affected qualifying session on Saturday. Initially he lost out to Dino Zamparelli but was able to work his way past on lap six, setting the fastest lap by over half a second at the same time. Unfortunately, a spin at Druids early on lap seven sent Dan tumbling down the order before he staged a brave fight back to narrowly missed out on sixth place by a hairs breadth.
Race two would be an easier affair by Dan’s standards. Starting on pole for the standing start race, the Nationwide Crash Repair/PPG backed car powered into the lead. Dan set a string of fast times to build a lead of 3.3 seconds over second placed Zamparelli, only to have that benefit neutralised on lap 12 with the appearance of the safety car after a backmarker spun. Nevertheless, a superb restart saw Dan lead by 1.7 seconds, a gap he maintained until he crossed the line to take a record breaking 12th win of the season, surpassing his own 2015 tally and that of mentor Tim Harvey.
“I’m really pleased,” said Dan. “To win 12 races at 16 attempts is pretty impressive. I’ve had such a great year and, if anything we’ve had a better year than last year, bar Croft where we had problems and we weren’t great we had a seventh and a second. Here I span myself out, I don’t make many mistakes but that was one, but I’ve only finished lower than second twice in 32 attempts.”
The statistics are mental and not just for me but the team, the fact that the car has been so reliable, my mechanic Al has been amazing and it was just a joy to drive today. We were mega all day. The fastest lap by half a second in race one outlined how fast we were. I’m thankful to Nationwide for all of their support, Tim Harvey for all he’s done for me throughout, PPG, Duo, Brown Brothers and I’m proud to be part of all of it because it has been a mega couple of years.”
