National Apprenticeship Week – Day Two - Nationwide’s Apprentice Success

March 07, 2017

We have an industry leading apprenticeship programme at Nationwide. In recent years, we have had hundreds of talented individuals enrol onto the programme and develop into skilled individuals, starting their journey towards a successful career in the industry with Nationwide. As we have growing number of apprentices within the group, we also have a number of stories of individual’s success whilst on the apprenticeship with Nationwide.

Flashback to the summer of 2015 and the World Skills Competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Apprentice Panel Technician, Ryan Jones (Nationwide JCC Hinckley) represented the UK in the Autobody Repair Category. Ryan competed against the best apprentices in this field from around the world and after 4 days of competition.

Success in competitions continued last year as we saw two of Nationwide’s apprentices finish in medal positions at the IMI Skills Auto Competition (held and the World Skills Show at the NEC Birmingham). Paint apprentice, Theo Tsouknidas (Nationwide Cardiff) won Bronze in the Auto Refinishing category and Panel apprentice, Lewis Owers (Nationwide Swavesey) won Silver in the Body Repair category.

The success of Lewis & Theo is something that the entire team at Nationwide are proud of, especially their managers:

Lewis’s Manager, Kevin Anderson said: Louis has a great work ethic, work quality and is a great asset to the Nationwide Swavesey Team, everyone here is extremely proud of him'.

Theo’s Manager, Dale Carpenter also commented: ‘We are proud to have developed someone from scratch, into a really good painter, he’s a great asset to Nationwide moving forward in the future’.

It’s not just about success in competitions, at Nationwide’s Annual Conference Awards, we recognise the hard work and commitment of all our apprentices and name our Apprentice of the Year. Last year the award went to Keiron Coombs (Nationwide Coventry), Daniel Beale (Nationwide Oxford) and Ryan Jones (NJCC Hinckley) who all demonstrated great attitude, approach and development whilst on the programme.

Nationwide will again be presenting the Apprentice of the Year 2017 accolade at the Annual Conference on Friday 10th March.

The success of Nationwide Apprentices doesn’t stop there, Daryl Head (Nationwide Swindon) has qualified to join Squad UK for World Skills 2017. Progressing through various stages of the competition, Daryl has made it to the final 2 of the selection process to represent the UK at World Skills in Abu Dhabi later this year.

Daryl is currently part way through his development programme, which all Squad UK competitors go through, leading up to the final head to head competition in May. This stage of competition will decide who gets the place on the plane to Abu Dhabi and represents the UK in the competition. Everyone at Nationwide wishes Daryl the best of luck and will be supporting him all the way.
