Nationwide’s Michael Kilner to Compete in IMI Skill Auto Final!

November 15, 2017

Nationwide Crash Repair Centres, the industry leaders in automotive repair, are pleased to announce that we have a finalist in this year’s IMI Skill Auto competition. The competition, described as the search for automotive excellence, see’s students and apprentices compete in a range of practices, including automotive refinishing, and automotive body repair, all hoping to be named best in the UK!

Nationwide’s Michael Kilner, from Sheffield, is delighted to be competing as a finalist in body repair at this year’s competition! Michael is a third-year Panel Apprentice, and a shining star at Nationwide.

To be named as a finalist, he completed an online test, in which he came in the top 18 apprentices in the country. From here he took part in a practical examination, and was successful in coming in the top six within his category. Michael will now attend the IMI Skill Auto final held as part of The Skills Show in Birmingham on 16th and 17th November where he will compete against his peers for the gold medal.

Commenting on his success in the competition, Michael said: “I am really excited about getting through to the finals. It felt like an eternity waiting for the results to come through, but when I got the phone call to say I had made it I was in complete shock. All I can say is thank you to everybody at Nationwide and my family for supporting me, in particular Dave Hopkins my mentor, I wouldn’t have gotten this far if it wasn’t for him. I’m really looking forward to the finals.”

IMI Skill Auto is a gateway to WorldSkills, the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world. Nationwide Paint Technician and former Apprentice Daryl Head succeeded in securing the silver medal at WorldSkills this year, and Michael may well be on his way to following in Daryl’s footsteps. Daryl will attend the event, along with the Nationwide Team, to support Michael and show future apprentice’s what life at Nationwide is all about! It is definitely an exciting time for Michael and everyone at Nationwide!

Michael’s General Manager, Paul Garbett, said: “I’m extremely proud of Michael for getting through to the finals. It’s a true reflection of his hard work and that of his mentor Dave Hopkins. I will be going along to Birmingham in order to support him and cheer him on. Michael is a demonstration of exactly what can be achieved through hard work and commitment and he has a great future with Nationwide.”

At Nationwide, we are dedicated to bringing through the next generation of talent, and that is why we invest so heavily in our Apprentices. We encourage all our apprentices to go above and beyond to achieve great success.

Everyone at Nationwide will have their fingers crossed for Michael, but regardless of the outcome, we are extremely proud of him and all that he has achieved!
