Some Frequently Asked Questions

Nationwide have recently run and developed, in partnership with one of our training providers, a Multi-Skill Apprenticeship route. Apprentices will achieve a level 2 multi-skilled qualification in each repair discipline (Panel, Paint and M.E.T.) before choosing one discipline to further focus on to achieve a Level 3 NVQ.

We have listened to the feedback from our previous apprentices about what would benefit them and how best to engage with future apprentices on the programme. This has resulted in having a flexible approach, where our apprentices get to know other aspects of the business, spending time on reception, working in the parts department and with VDA’s to gain a greater understanding of the wider operation. This approach has received really positive feedback.

These are designed to develop skills such as team work, understanding others and their potential for taking on new challenges towards a rewarding career.

Daryl Head
Daryl HeadPaint Technician, NCRC Swindon
“My Journey to World Skills has been a tremendous experience for me so far and I would not have been able to achieve this without the support of Nationwide.”

“I have always wanted to work in the vehicle repair industry, tinkering with cars with my Dad who was self-employed within the trade from a young age. I knew that university wasn’t for me and that securing an apprenticeship would be a better option. There are so many opportunities within the industry, and so many areas to specialise in.”

Daryl’s journey began back in 2012 when he started his apprenticeship in paint just days after he left school. Since then he has gone on to compete in the National Skill Competition and be named Nationwide Apprentice of the Year.

Since completing his apprenticeship in 2015, Daryl was scouted to join Team UK during a Skill Auto competition, and after several rounds of competition, he was named as the UK representative in his discipline at WorldSkills 2017 in Abu Dhabi.

“It has rounded me as a person as well as a painter. As a person, it has probably made me more interested in what I do, how to do it better all the time and in the future hopefully it can propel my career.”
